Good Timber
The tree that never had to fight
For sun and sky and air and light,
But stood out in the open plain
And always got its share of rain,
Never became a forest king
But lived and died a scrubby thing.
The man who never had to toil
To gain and farm his patch of soil,
Who never had to win his share
Of sun and sky and light and air,
Never became a manly man
But lived and died as he began.
Good timber does not grow with ease,
The stronger wind, the stronger trees,
The further sky, the greater length,
The more the storm, the more the strength.
By sun and cold, by rain and snow,
In trees and men good timbers grow.
Where thickest lies the forest growth
We find the patriarchs of both.
And they hold counsel with the stars
Whose broken branches show the scars
Of many winds and much of strife.
This is the common law of life.
Beach
I was sitting on the sand
Watching the clouds pass by
When I saw in the sky a lion and a bear.
I said oh my!
I look on my left.
I see a white dove fly so high.
I started to cry.
I said to myself I must be crazy.
There is no bear or lion in the sky.
Maybe a dove and some water below
And other things that we don't know.
Saturday Kick-Off
The pitch waits,
green as a giant carpet,
smoothing itself under cloudy skies.
Boots stamp and scuff.
A whistle shrills.
Suddenly, the match wakes up.
The ball skips between feet
like a bright, restless mouse,
darting here, spinning there.
Our striker is a rocket,
bursting forward,
chasing space, chasing hope.
The goalkeeper stands like a wall,
hands ready, eyes sharp,
guarding the net.
Pass!
Tackle!
Turn!
The crowd rolls and roars
like thunder in the stands.
Flags flap. Voices fly.
The stadium trembles with excitement.
Then comes the shot —
swift as lightning,
hard as a hammer.
Net.
Goal.
For one shining moment,
time hangs still.
Then everything erupts.
Cheering, jumping, hugging, shouting.
Even the football seems to smile
as it bounces away
in the warm, loud light.
