Stars & Hexagons

For this lesson you will need a 1p coin to use as a counter and print off or make the 100 square.

To begin with once you have cracked the code numbers try to solve the addition sum mentally by using your previous learning on tens and ones, for example,

14 + 14 =  ?  my brain might think 10 add 10 is 20, 4 add 4 is 8 so therefore I can now work out

20 add 8 is 28, so 14 + 14 = 28

24 + 23 =  ?  my brain might think 20 add 20 is 40, 4 add 3 is 7 so therefore I can now work out

40 add 7 is 47, so 24 + 23 = 47

Once you have had a go at working it out mentally check your answer is correct by counting on using a 100 square or using your

10s strips and 1s from last week

Stars                            Hexagons                   10s and 1s strip

Diamonds & Hearts

For this lesson you will need a to print off or make a number line and have some items for counting such as dried pasta and a 1p coin to use as a counter. Diamonds you will also need some 10s strips and 1s from last week.

To begin with once you have cracked the code numbers try to solve the addition sum by counting on using a numberline.  Once you have had a go at using a numberline to solve the sum check your answers are correct by counting out the 2 amounts using pasta or 10s strip and 1s from last week.

There are no rules to tell you which grapheme to use but there are some helpful hints for you to remember.  Take a look at the list below.

Never use au at the end of a word; use ore or aw, for example shore, for, jaw

Aw is often used before n and l for example, dawn and crawl

Learn the rhymes for your new sounds and make up your own actions to go with the sound. Then click on the Power Point and practice all the sounds you have learnt so far.

Stars & Hexagons

You will need your 100 square from yesterdays activity just to recap on the order of numbers.  Your first task is to crack the code for your group using your place value knowledge.

Parents please read before your child completes the activity below.

We frequently use a 100 square in class which helps to show children the natural patterns in numbers and enable them to investigate how numbers relate.  We have been looking at the value of each digit in numbers during maths last week and developing understanding of place value.  If children can fill in random sections of a 100 square as in the following activities, then they are showing a good understanding of number patterns and place value. Sit with your child, look at the whole 100 square and encourage them to think about how number patterns change as you go across the rows (the digits go up by one) or down the columns (tens digit goes up by one)

For todays lesson you will need to think about previous learning in school when we looked at Tally Charts and we used tally marks to record the jobs children wanted to do. Do you remember?  Watch the clips below to refresh your understanding of tally marks before completing todays task.

All those 'Missing Dinosaur' posters you made Monday have sparked a massive response of people reporting dinosaurs seen roaming the woods and ocean clifftops! Take a look at the picture of the number of dinosaurs spotted, can you organise this in a Tally Chart using Tally Marks?

Print the Tally Chart or draw it in your book and write in the dinosaur names without the pictures.

Look at the picture of the dinosaurs can you add them up so that we know how many of each kind there are? Click on the first worksheet to open then scroll down to see sheets 2 and 3. You can print off the sheet or show the addition in your book as a number story, for example 3 + 2 = 5

Open the image for your group and work through the Big Maths CLIC number questions to develop mathematical vocabulary and use your number knowledge.  Either print off the sheet or write the sums in your book.  THIS IS NOT A TIMED ACTIVITY

                        CLIC                                                             CLIC

Today is the 4th time you will take part in the weekly Big Maths Beat That timed challenge, think about are you improving your time each week!!!!  So before you begin print off the sheet below or write the sums in your book ready to time yourself without working out the answers.

PARENTS IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

The Big Maths challenge is a once a week timed activity and you will be working towards eventually completing this sheet in 30 seconds. You will complete the same sums each week but they will be presented in different orders. Now you all know from learning about time that 30 seconds is not a lot of time and I am not expecting many to be able to complete it in 30 seconds on the 4th attempt.  In fact it will most likely take many weeks for some and others may not get there until towards the end of  year 1.  Read the instructions for your group for a good starting point for your level of learning.  So get comfortable and ask a parent to time you completing the sums in your book or on the sheet.

Stars -  At your level you should be able to mentally recall these addition facts and you will be focusing on improving your time and quick mental recall week by week.

Hexagons - At your level you may be able to mentally recall simple addition facts or you may need to use the strategy where you put the largest number in your head and count on.  For example 6 + 4, put 6 in your head hold up 4 fingers and count on from 6 until all 4 fingers are added to the 6.

Diamonds - Some of  you may be able to use the same strategy as hexagons to solve or you may need to count out objects and add them together to find your answer.

Hearts - At your level you will need to use objects to count into 2 groups and then count them all  together to find your answer.

Some great times happening in the Stars group, Shifa 36 seconds Zack 53 seconds – whatever time you complete it in it does not matter; what matters is that you do better than you did the week before – Good luck

WHATEVER STRATEGY YOU USE TO SOLVE PLEASE REMEMBER TO TIME YOURSELF AND WRITE IT IN YOUR BOOK OR ON THE SHEET. YOU ARE WORKING TO IMPROVE YOUR TIME WEEK BY WEEK!
