Main Lesson -

What is a word problem?

A word problem is a few sentences describing a 'real-life' scenario where a problem needs to be solved by way of a mathematical calculation such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

We are going to focus on addition and subtraction word problems.

Watch the video below which talks you through how to work out word problems. See if you can follow each step.

Now look at the word problems on the sheet below. Use the number line to help you find the answers. Can you write the number sentence to help you find the answer?

You can print out the sheet and stick it into your exercise book if you have access to a printer. If you cannot print out the sheet get an adult to copy the word problems into your books and draw number line tohelp you find each answer.

Good luck and have fun!yes
