Main Lesson -

What is a word problem?

A word problem is a few sentences describing a 'real-life' scenario where a problem needs to be solved by way of a mathematical calculation such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

We are going to focus on addition and subtraction word problems.

Watch the video below which talks you through how to work out word problems. See if you can follow each step.

Now look at the addition word problem challenge cards below. Work through each of the problems in your exercise book and write down the number sentence you have used to find the answer. You can print out the challenge cards and stick them into your book with the answer underneath or copy out the problem and write your answer underneath.

Remember to write the short date and learning objective at the top of the page.
