Hope you had fun yesterday cutting foods into halves and quarters! Today you are going to be exploring finding halves of shapes. When you cut or share something in half (½) you are making 2 equal parts, when you cut something into quarters (¼) you are making 4 equal parts these are known as fractions. A fraction shows how many parts have been used or how many parts are left. Watch the clips below for your group to find out more and complete the halves or quarters of shapes activity sheet.

All groups – Today you are going to explore halving numbers numbers using objects and begin to think about halving as the opposite of doubling. For example, if you know that double 2 is 4, then you can work out half of 4 is 2. Remember halving is making 2 groups which are exactly the same. Watch the clips below to learn more about halving amounts.
Next open the Power Point and work your way through each slide trying to solve the answers before the next click. To play the PowerPoint click on the 'slideshow' tab, then click 'Play from beginning slide' tab. Then Hearts complete halving activity sheet 1 / Stars, Hexagons & Diamonds activity sheet 1 & 2.

Activity
For the rest of the week in literacy, we are going to be making our own information books about mini beasts.
Maths
All groups – choose any of the daily mental warm up clips from this week that you need more practice in.
Well done this week everyone, I hope you now have a good understanding about halving. Look at some of the main points below.
A fraction is when something is shared into equal parts.
When you half an object, shape, picture, amount or number you are simply sharing what you have into 2 identical parts or groups.
You can write half as ½ which basically means you have 1 part of the 2 halves
Halving is the opposite of doubling, for example if you know double 3 is 6/then you know half of 6 is 3
Today you are going to develop your mental recall skills of halving numbers. Click on picture below then click on halves, next choose the number range ‘halves to 10’. Stars once you are confident in this level you may want to challenge yourself to complete a higher number range.
Stars extension clip – something to think about and explore if you are ready for it - 2 new maths words & symbols (multiply X) and (divide ÷)
Doubling is multiplying (X) by 2, for example, double 4 (4+4) = 8 or 4 X 2 (4+4) = 8
Halving is dividing/sharing (÷) by 2, for example half of 8 = 4 / 8 shared by 2 is 4 (8 ÷ 2) = 4

Maths
All groups - choose any of the daily mental warm up clips from this week that you need more practice in. Then complete Big Maths Addition Sheet & Big Maths CLIC sheet. Click on images below to open
Stars - The idea of the Big Maths Addition sheet is to develop mental calculations. Once you have been successful in completing these weekly sheets correctly, begin to try and complete all calculations in a set time. Start initially with 3 or 2 minutes and as your mental calculation skills improve reduce the time each week. The Final goal is to be able to complete these sheets within 30 seconds. The sums are written in different orders each week!
Hexagons - As stars except perhaps start off with completing in 5 or 4 minutes and slowly reduce the time over the next few weeks.
Diamonds & Hearts - use objects or number line to help solve additions with no time limit.
